Root Canal Treatment
Here at Real Dentistry Kilbirnie we will do a through examination and x-rays before we prescribe root canal treatment. The number of appointments varies depending on the difficulty, but most root canal treatments take two or three appointments.
In the first appointment, we will give you local anesthetic that will completely numb the tooth and area around it. We then make our way into the pulp to remove and clean the dead tissue. During subsequent appointments we check to ensure it is thoroughly cleaned and then seal it. The remaining tooth may need to have a crown or a large filling to finish the procedure.
Dental crowns are a way of restoring a badly damaged tooth. It protects the structure of the tooth by providing full coverage of the tooth. Dental crowns are made from strong materials – ceramic, zirconia or gold, that are designed to last many years.
They also have the advantage of looking and feeling like a natural tooth.
Dental bridges are a way to restore a missing tooth. Dental bridges are made from the same materials as dental crowns-ceramic, zirconia or from gold. They provide a fixed option for replacing a missing tooth.
Dental Bridges can be with Natural teeth or implanted.
Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where the missing teeth are. The bone then bonds to the titanium providing a stable surface for a dental prosthesis to be placed.
There are many types of prosthesis available. This ranges form a single crown to replace a missing tooth, a fixed bridge to replace several teeth or a complete fixed prosthesis to replace all the teeth missing in the jaw.
One of the major reasons that you need to have fillings is because of tooth decay or cavities, which may or may not be painful. This leaves surfaces vulnerable to further attack on the tooth that can reach the pulp and require more extensive surgery like root canal treatment or extraction.
In order to prevent further decay, the tooth needs to have the cavities removed and restored with a filling material. This is usually done in a single sitting, depending on the number of teeth that need to be restored. We offer amalgam, gold inlay/onlay or composite fillings.
Dental Hygiene (Cleaning)
Regular visits to a dental hygienist will help prevent bad breath and gum disease. We recommend having your teeth and gums professionally cleaned every six months to prevent the build up of tartar and plaque.
People who maintain good oral hygiene and see a dentist regularly are far more likely to have healthy teeth and gums.
Dental Night Guards
Dental night guards are custom made mouth guards that are used for many reasons.
The advantages of a custom night guard are that it provides a better fit and is more comfortable to wear.

There are many indications for the extraction of teeth. These include: severe/unrestorable dental decay, infections, bone loss from gum disease, unrestorable broken down teeth, too many teeth – causing crowding.
The most common risk of not having a tooth extracted is continued deterioration which can result in pain and infection. If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss these with your dentist at your initial consultation.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth extraction is the removal of your upper and/or lower wisdom teeth under local anaesthesia with or without sedation.
The main issue with wisdom teeth is that there is a lack of space in our jaws for them. This can result in: dental decay, infection, damage to neighbouring teeth, crowding of teeth, cysts, tumours, jaw fracture.
Please discuss any concerns with us at your initial consultation.
